The Mallacoota Arts Council recently launched the 2017-18 EJ Brady Short Story Competition. We apologise for this late launch, but felt it was important not to dissapoint our loyal entrants, so lets regard this as a better late than never situation. The categories for 2017–18 are unchanged from 2016-2017 but we have increased the prize money for the winner of the Betka Prize humourous short story to $1000. This has been done in an effort to encourage authors to submit more humourous short stories.

The runner-up in the Mallacoota Prize receiving $300 is Julie Chevalier from NSW for her story Rent-a-Child.
The winner of the $500 Gabo Prize for a short story of less than 700 words is Robyn Butler from Victoria for her story The Dam.
The winner of the $500 Betka Prize for a humorous story of less than 1000 words is Duncan McGlynn from the ACT for his story The Black Widow.
A $100 encouragement award for a previously unpublished author is awarded to Laura Kenny from NSW for her Gabo Prize entry Milk and Bubbles and Innocence.

The runner up with a prize of $300 is Peter Rodgers from Bundanoon, NSW for his story My Island Home.
The winner of the $500 Gabo Prize for a very short story is Nicole Gouda from MonaVale, NSW for her story Parish Picnic.
An encouragement award of $100 has been awarded to Alexandra Elgue from Brandon, ACT for her story Tide will tell.
