Exhibitions, workshops and performances
MA Space is home to a changing calendar of exhibitions, workshops, visiting artists and special performances. Housed within the Croajingolong Centre for Communications and the Arts, the gallery showcases work spanning painting, photography, sculpture and mixed media – much of it created by Mallacoota's own residents.

A decade of making, showing and sharing
MA Space opened in late 2016 and has since hosted exhibitions, workshops, music, talks, dinners and community projects. These are some of the highlights.
2026Sep
FragileOpening night on 4 September for Fragile, an exhibition of new interdisciplinary artwork, open daily until December.
2026Jun
Winter Solstice and The TurningAs part of the East Gippsland Winter Festival, the gallery hosted a weekend of music, art and workshops. The centrepiece, The Turning, was an original composition by Kristin Rule with poetry by Don Ashby, presented in 8.2 surround sound. The weekend also featured animations made by Mallacoota P–12 College students with the Mallacoota Amateur Film Collective, the community project Knit Happens, a Mariposa Stitch raffia workshop and a performance by the Mallacoota Healing Singers.

Lakeside and summer workshopsLakeside, a sculptural screen by Jade Oakley and Stephanie Mew, was installed in the new Mallacoota streetscape, funded by the East Gippsland Community Foundation and a Tiny Towns Grant, with art workshops for Mallacoota P–12 College students. We also announced summer workshops in the Gallery and the new Studio.

Our first Teacher Artist in ResidenceKim Marcovich, a visual arts teacher from Sydney, spent his school holidays working on his own art practice in the new all-purpose studio.

Art and recoveryThe ABC reported on how art classes have helped Mallacoota residents recover from the trauma of the 2019 bushfire. Read the ABC story
2023Dec
Summer exhibition and workshopsArtists answered an open call for the summer show, which opened on Friday 8 December. The gallery opened seven days a week, with workshops in watercolour, printmaking, alcohol inks, drawing, rope jewellery, flower arranging, fabric mending, basket weaving and air-dry clay.

Beyond Climate GriefWe hosted the Mallacoota launch of Jonica Newby’s book Beyond Climate Grief on 21 March.

Mallacoota PhoenixWith Regional Arts Victoria and Creative Victoria, free sculpture workshops with Jade Oakley produced 100 silk bird sculptures, including work by more than 50 Mallacoota P–12 College students. They formed an installation in the gallery for three weeks around the first anniversary of the bushfires.

Norm Neilson retrospectiveA retrospective of work by Norm Neilson, opening on 22 November and possibly his last solo show. The Cohen Café tribute concert followed in the same week.

NaturaArtist in Residence Rachel Mounsey turned MA Space into a wet plate collodion photography studio from 14 to 22 October.

Rock Pools and the Gabo RoomThe Rock Pools exhibition opened on 5 August and launched the freshly painted Gabo Room, with textile art by Kim Gordon and the performance Bastion’s Last Breath.
